Zhruba v roce 1750 se začali v jihoportugalské provincii Alentejo chovat andalusané. V roce 1748 založila královské dynastie Braganza hřebčín ve Vila do Portel a později ho přenesla do Alteru ve středním Portugalsku. V tomto hřebčíně vzniklo plemeno utčené pro klasické ježdění královksé jízdárně; proto se nejčastěji označuje jak alter – real. Je to najkvalitnější portugalské plemeno, vysoké 150-160cm. Jezdecký kůň velmi inteligentní a ochotný. Má středně velkou, mezi očima širokou hlavu, dobře nesený krk s hřebenem , výbornou stavbu těla a vynikající nohy. Zvlášť vhodný pro vysokou školu jezdectví.
